So, is photography dead? It’s a big question that I get a lot. It’s too saturated to make money.

So here’s a little story for you.

For my Senior project in college, I sold an image from it. At that moment, I felt the rush that someone actually paid me for what I loved to do.

This taught me about building an online presence and how to profit from that online presence.

At the time, I was just dreaming. It was a dream that suggested that I could somehow appear online, take photographs, help others by giving them a feeling from my work, and make money from that.

It truly seemed far-fetched, but I saw other photographers do this and make money, so it gave me this silly little hope that maybe, just maybe, I could do the same.

Well, I did what I thought would make me money: I built a website and started posting my photographs to everyone.

And there was little me, sitting in my little office waiting for the sales to come in…

But that didn't happen :(

Thinking, “Maybe, just maybe, I’m not good enough, and it was a fluke that someone actually bought a photograph from me.”

Even though I felt dazed and confused about what next steps to take, the one thing I really learned from the sale was to “never give up, whatever you do.”

So I...

  • Showed up online
  • Served up helpful tips to my audience.
  • Gave them stuff for free.
  • Got their email.
  • Continued the conversation via email.

Seemed easy enough.

But, it wasn’t.

Seven years ago, trying to capture someone's email and then send them a freebie was nearly impossible. Seriously.

AND

Sending emails to people that are not going to buy from you is a waste of time.

After months of fumbling and lots of learning, I finally figured out how to find my clients..

I just needed to understand them. It was such a simple idea that I couldn’t believe it was it. But I had to do the steps in the tutorials in this course to move this faster.

And I will never forget the first time someone wanted and image from me and found me… I didn’t find them. It was like I was a magnet.

I literally couldn’t believe it.

Someone actually gave me their money and it happened without me doing a thing. They went to my site, and connected with me via email and BOOM. I had a new email client.

Truth be told, I felt cool. And excited.

But then, from there, I froze. I wasn’t sure if this was a fluke again.

So I put out content that my clients actually loved the clients kept coming in. What! I was like, this is gold!

So glad we connected (insert where). I just put together a new piece of work for my portfolio (insert name) I wanted to send it to you. I hope you like it.

It’s all about "insert feelings from the photograph" and I hope it helps you (insert what you sell - Ex see the beauty hanging on your wall or helps you see the vision for your business).

​And, people actually liked those little emails.

So, I was in the weeds of life trying to manage small kids. It was a lot. Kids are such a blessing and yet they take away so many of your brain cells for anything other than loving them and trying to keep them alive.

Plus, I worked fulltime :(

I would like to send an email whenever I can between cleaning up messy spills, taking the kids to school, practicing for their sports, working full time, and trying to build a photographic brand.

It wasn’t consistent, but I would do the best I could.

I just wanted to help others so I started to teach how I processed my work.

I didn’t even know you could make money from it, nor was that really my goal.

And this is where the story gets crazy.
