Many photographers know they probably need a website…
…but they delay building one because it feels overwhelming.
Too many platforms.
Too many decisions.
Not knowing what to put on it.
If that sounds familiar, you're not alone.
In this episode of **Capture and Connect**, I talk about what actually makes a photography website work — and why it’s often much simpler than photographers think.
You can watch the **live uncut conversation on YouTube**, where we dive deeper into the topic and chat with photographers live.
Or if you prefer a shorter version, you can listen to the **edited episode on Apple Podcasts**, which is cut down and straight to the point.

Why I Wanted to Talk About Photography Websites
I wanted to talk about websites because a friend of mine and I were recently discussing hers.
She was working on rebuilding it, and I thought:
“Photographers need help with this.”
So I decided to do a live podcast about **making photography websites easier**.
Spring is in the air right now, and this is a great time to clean things up.
Just like we clean our studios or organize our gear, sometimes it’s time to clean up our website too.
Maybe you:
• don’t have a website yet
• want to improve your current website
• feel frustrated because it isn’t doing anything for your business
If that sounds like you, you're not alone.
Many photographers struggle with this.

A Quick Introduction
If you're new here, my name is Janice Sullivan.
I’ve spent decades photographing and licensing my photography to businesses.
I actually went to college for art with an emphasis in photography, and much of my career has been focused on photography licensing.
Later, I began mentoring photographers because I kept getting the same question over and over:
“How do you actually make money with photography?”
There are a lot of negative voices out there saying photographers can’t do it.
But I know from experience that you can — and your website plays a role in that.
---
The Real Purpose of a Photography Website
Many photographers think their website is simply a place to show their work.
But that’s not really the purpose.
A website should help people:
• understand what you do
• connect with your photography
• see that you are professional
• know how to contact you
Your website is essentially your digital storefront.
And sometimes photographers make it far more complicated than it needs to be.
---
Why Photographers Avoid Building a Website
One of the biggest reasons photographers delay building a website is **overwhelm**.
There are so many choices:
WordPress
Squarespace
Etsy
Portfolio platforms
Landing page builders
And photographers often think everything needs to be perfect before they launch.
So they wait.
Sometimes that wait turns into months or even years.
But the truth is…
The hardest part of building a website usually isn’t the technology.
It’s knowing what to say about your photography.
Who is your work for?
What do you offer?
Why does your photography matter to the people you want to serve?
Once you understand those things, building a website becomes much easier.
---
Progress Over Perfection
One thing I always tell photographers is this:
**Progress over perfection.**
Your website doesn’t have to be perfect when you start.
It just needs to exist.
As your photography business grows, your website will grow with it.

A Helpful Place to Start
If you’re still figuring out what images actually attract the right clients, I created a free guide that will help you.
How to Pick the Images That Will Sell
This guide helps photographers understand how to choose the images that actually connect with the people who want their work.

Final Thoughts
Building a photography website doesn’t have to feel overwhelming.
When you focus on your clients, your message, and the work you want to share, the process becomes much simpler.
Your website doesn’t need to be complicated.
It just needs to clearly show:
• who you are
• what you create
• and how people can connect with you
That’s where the real magic happens.

Cheers, my friend.
