Is investing in your photography business worth it?

If you’re a landscape, nature, or fine art photographer trying to turn your passion into something more, this is a question that comes up quickly—especially when you start seeing offers for websites, branding, and marketing programs that promise results

Those things can work.

But if they’re your first step, they’re often not the right step.

In this post, I want to share a costly mistake I made—and one I see many photographers making right now—so you can avoid wasting time, money, and energy building something that isn’t ready to grow yet.

The Moment Most Photographers Decide to Invest

There’s a moment that happens for a lot of photographers.

Usually around this time of year.

You’re shooting more.
You’re outside again.
You feel inspired.

And then the thought comes in quietly:

“Maybe I could really do something with this.”

That moment is powerful.

But it’s also where a lot of decisions get made quickly.

What Most Photographers Invest In First

Once that shift happens, the next step often feels obvious.

You start looking at:

Websites
Branding
Marketing programs
Courses that promise a clear plan

And these things look professional.
They feel structured.
They feel like progress.

And in many ways… they are.

But there’s one problem.

The Costly Mistake (This Changes Everything)

Most of these programs give you a plan.

But they don’t give you the people.

You’re told what to build.
You’re shown how to market it.
You’re given steps to follow.

But you’re still left figuring out:

Who is this actually for?
What do they care about?
Why would they want this from me?

And without those answers…

Even the best plan won’t work.

The Truth (That Isn’t About Your Talent)

When things don’t work, it’s easy to think:

“Maybe my work isn’t good enough”
“Maybe I’m not cut out for this”

But that’s not what’s happening.

What’s really happening is this:

You’ve built something… but it has nowhere to land.

It exists.
It’s real.
But no one is waiting for it yet.

My $2,000 Mistake

I’ve been here myself.

I invested about $2,000 into a program I truly believed would help me move forward.

I followed the steps.
I showed up.
I did the work.

And I didn’t make a single dollar!

Not one.

The program wasn’t bad.
The strategy worked for others.

But it didn’t work for me—because I wasn’t ready for it yet.

I didn’t fully understand who I was trying to reach… or how to connect what I was offering to the right people.

So everything I built… didn’t connect.

What I Would Do Instead (If I Were Starting Today)

Before investing in expensive tools or programs, I would slow things down just enough to ask:

Who is this for?
What do they actually want or need?
What are they responding to?

I would test small things first.

Simple offers.
Simple conversations.
Simple ways to see what connects.

Because that feedback tells you everything.

What Is Actually Worth Investing In First

This doesn’t mean you shouldn’t invest in your photography business.

You absolutely should.

But early on, the most valuable investments are:

Learning
Guidance
Feedback
Clarity

Not just building something and hoping it works.

A Better Way to Think About Growth

Your photography business doesn’t grow because you built something beautiful.

It grows when the right person sees themselves in it.

That’s the difference.

If You’re Feeling Stuck Right Now

If you’re in that place where you’re:

Thinking about investing
Trying to figure out what to build
Feeling unsure about what direction makes sense

You’re not messing up.

You just need a clearer starting point.

That’s exactly why I’m hosting a free 3-day Bootcamp.

Not to give you more things to build…

But to help you understand:

What direction actually makes sense for you
Who your work is really for
What to focus on before you invest time or money

You’ll be able to ask questions, talk through your ideas, and get clarity in real time.

If you take anything from this—

Let it be this:

Don’t invest in building something…
until you know it has somewhere to land.
