Ever post a photo you love… then check your phone later and feel your stomach drop because the likes are low? That spiral is real — and it’s exactly how social media keeps photographers stuck.
Here’s the truth: you don’t need thousands of people to see your work. You need the right people to see your work.
In today’s episode of Capture and Connect, I’m sharing the steady (non-crazy) way to build a photography business — without letting the algorithm decide your confidence, your reach, or your income.
Why “Chasing Likes” Feels So Awful (And Why It Doesn’t Work)
Social media runs on algorithms — meaning a computer decides who sees your post. And here’s the kicker: the system measures activity, not quality.
So if your post doesn’t get quick engagement, it gets shown to fewer people… and you start questioning everything:
• Why isn’t my work getting seen?
• Do I need trends to get noticed?
• Is this what it takes to grow a business?
That doubt is exactly what I want to pull you out of today.
Do You Really Need Social Media to Build a Photography Business?
Short answer: no.
Longer answer: it depends on how you use it.
Social media can help people discover your work, see what you do quickly, start a conversation, and click through to your website. But it does not replace having a clear way for people to work with you — and posting more does not automatically mean more clients.
I built my business long before everything was social. I tried the gallery scene (didn’t love it), and I leaned into licensing and partnerships by researching companies that fit my work and reaching out directly.
So yes — social can support you. But it should not be the only place your business lives.
If Likes Aren’t the Goal… How Do You Get Photography Clients?
1) Make it obvious how people can work with you
People don’t just need to see your photos. They need to understand your offer.
Ask yourself:
• Do you sell prints?
• Do you license work?
• Do you create work for businesses?
• Do you offer custom pieces?
If someone loves your work, the next step should be clear — they shouldn’t have to guess what to do.
2) Focus on the right people (not everyone)
You don’t need massive reach. You need alignment.
The right person seeing the right image matters more than 500 likes — because that’s what leads to real business.
3) Use simple direct outreach (the fastest path for many photographers)
This doesn’t have to be spammy or pushy. It can be intentional.
Business-to-business ideas:
• Research companies that match your style
• Find decision-makers
• Introduce yourself and explain why your work fits
Business-to-customer ideas:
• Connect with collectors
• Attend art shows
• Build relationships locally
• Start real conversations
Build Your “Home Base” (So You’re Not at the Mercy of the Algorithm)
Social media is a place to share — not the place your business should live.
Your home base is:
• A simple website
• An email list
Because those connections don’t disappear when social platforms change.
And yes — email still works. When someone joins your list, they chose to hear from you.
The Only “Metrics” I Want You Watching (Keep It Simple)
I know metrics can feel overwhelming — so let’s keep this easy.
Instead of watching likes, notice:
• Are people reaching out (DMs, emails, questions)?
• Are you getting inquiries?
• Are people visiting your website?
• Is your email list growing?
• Are you having real conversations with collectors or businesses?
Check once a week. No pressure — just direction.
Wrap-Up: The Steady Way to Grow (Starting Today)
Here’s the shift:
Don’t chase likes.
Don’t depend on the algorithm.
Don’t measure your worth with hearts on a screen.
Instead:
• Build something steady
• Focus on the right people
• Make it clear how to work with you
• Watch for real signs someone is moving toward becoming a client
And ask yourself this:
If social media disappeared tomorrow, would people still be able to find you… and contact you?
That’s the new way.
