You Might Be Guessing Your Way Through Your Photography Business… Here’s How to Tell

If your photography business feels scattered… slow… or like nothing is really clicking…

There’s a good chance you’re not building it, yep you’re guessing your way through it.

And if that feels a little uncomfortable to hear, you’re not alone. Most photographers were never actually shown how to build a business. They were taught how to photograph… not how to turn that into something structured, clear, and sustainable.

So what happens?

You stay busy.
You try things.
You put yourself out there.

But nothing really moves forward.

Let’s change that.

5 Signs You Might Be Guessing Your Way Through Your Photography Business

1. You keep changing what you’re trying to sell

One week it’s prints.
Then maybe calendars.
Then you start thinking about licensing.

That’s not building—it’s searching for something to work.

When there’s no clear direction, your audience feels that. And when they feel it, they don’t move forward.

2. You’re not sure who you’re talking to

You’re sharing your work… but there’s no clear person on the other side of it.

So people might like what you’re doing—but they don’t feel like it’s for them.

And if they don’t feel that connection, they won’t take the next step.

3. You’re waiting for people to find you

You’re putting your work out there and hoping the right person sees it.

But building a business isn’t about hoping—it’s about guiding.

There’s a difference between passive visibility and intentional direction.

4. You’re learning more than you’re building

You’re watching videos.
Saving ideas.
Taking notes.

But nothing is actually being put into place.

This is where a lot of photographers get stuck—in a loop of learning without building anything real.

5. You feel busy… but nothing is moving forward

You’re doing things.
You’re putting time in.

But there’s no traction.

No clear path from what you’re doing… to someone actually buying.

That’s not a lack of effort—it’s a lack of structure.

So What Do You Do Instead?

If you saw yourself in any of these, it’s time to pause.

Not push harder—just pause.

Because guessing keeps you busy…
but it doesn’t move anything forward.

Instead, bring it back to this:

One clear direction
One person you’re talking to
One offer you’re leading people to
One simple path for them to get there

Not five ideas.
Not jumping around.
Not making people click all over the place trying to figure out what you do.

Just clear. Focused. Intentional.

A Better Question to Ask Yourself

Instead of asking:

“Why isn’t this working?”

Start asking:

👉 Am I actually building this… or am I just trying things?

That one question can completely change how you move forward.

Not Sure What to Build Yet?

If you’re still in that place where you’re not sure what direction to take, I created another video to help you start thinking through different paths you can take with your photography.

This doesn’t have to stay confusing.

You don’t need more effort.
